Networking for Creatives: How to Build Real Relationships Without Feeling Cringey

Let’s Be Honest, Networking Can Feel Awkward
If you’re a graphic designer, art director, or other creative professional, the word “networking” might send a small shiver down your spine. Visions of awkward mixers, forced conversations, and shallow business card exchanges are enough to make anyone want to run back to their studio. But here’s the truth: building real, human relationships is one of the most important things you can do to grow your creative career, and it doesn’t have to feel cringey.

At RoyerComm, we work with designers and art directors every day. We’ve seen firsthand how the right relationships, not just with clients, but with vendors, mentors, and collaborators, can open doors and elevate your work. Here’s how to build those relationships without selling your soul or pretending to be someone you’re not.

A curious post-it, which is a good example of how good networking starts with curiosity and questions, not a pitch 1. Start with Curiosity, Not a Pitch

You don’t need to walk into every interaction with a business card in one hand and a sales pitch in the other. In fact, please don’t. Great networking starts with a simple mindset shift: approach people with curiosity. Ask about their work. Listen more than you talk. Share when it’s natural, not because you feel like you have to “sell” yourself.

Whether you’re chatting with another designer at an event or meeting a commercial printer (like us!) for the first time, genuine curiosity builds trust. People remember how you made them feel, not how polished your elevator pitch was.

2. Be Seen in the Right Places (Online and Offline)

You don’t have to attend every industry event, but do pick one or two spaces, online or in person, where your ideal connections are spending time. That might be a local AIGA meetup, a niche Slack group for designers, or even your neighborhood print shop’s open house (we’ve been known to throw a few good ones here at RoyerComm).

And when you do show up, contribute. Ask questions, share your experience, comment thoughtfully on others’ work. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality presence.

3. Nurture Relationships with People Who Make Your Work Better

Designers who do their best work usually aren’t working in a vacuum. They have a team of trusted collaborators, including commercial printers. When you have a real relationship with a print partner, you gain more than production support; you gain a strategic ally.

At RoyerComm, we don’t just “take orders.” We collaborate with creatives to bring their ideas to life. We help troubleshoot issues before they become problems. We’ve even helped designers look like rockstars in front of their clients. And those kinds of partnerships only happen when there’s trust, which starts with, you guessed it, a conversation.

Scrabble pieces that spell "good things take time," just as networking - you have to play the long game 4. Play the Long Game

The best relationships aren’t transactional. They’re built over time. You might meet a copywriter today who refers you to a client six months from now. Or you may have a great conversation with a printer (hi again!) that turns into a collaborative project down the road.

Don’t force connections to “pay off” immediately. Stay in touch, send a thoughtful note after a project, refer work when it’s a good fit. People remember generosity and consistency far more than a one-time pitch.

5. It’s OK to Be You

Not everyone is a natural extrovert. That’s fine. You don’t have to “work the room” or be the loudest voice in the group. In fact, being quietly thoughtful and genuinely helpful can be your greatest networking strength.

If you’re not sure what to say, start with something simple:

  • “What kind of projects are you working on lately?”
  • “How did you get started in your field?”
  • “Do you ever work with commercial printers? I’ve been learning more about the process.”

These are easy openers that naturally lead into meaningful conversation, without the cringe.

The Right Relationships Change Everything

At the end of the day, networking for creatives isn’t about shaking the most hands or collecting the most contacts. It’s about finding your people, the ones who push you, support you, and help you do better work. That includes mentors, collaborators, clients, and yes, even your commercial printing partner.

If you’re ready to start building a real connection with a print team that understands creative work, RoyerComm would love to talk. We’re not just here to print your designs, we’re here to help bring them to life. Get in touch with us today!
